Task cards are a great way to give students choice and assess their individual understanding of the text. These task cards can be used with any novel or short story. There are a several task for each standard RL.1-RL.7.
About the Cards
1. USE WITH ANY NOVEL OR SHORT STORY. They can be assigned during the reading or afterwards.
2. The task cards in this set have been designed to specifically match the 9th-10th ELA Common Core Reading for Literature standards. However, if you are familiar with the standards, you know that the numbers at each grade level, 6th-12th, require almost the same skill, but the verbiage is adjusted for the grade-level. That said, there are varying levels of rigor for each standard, therefore, the teacher will need to only provide students with choice from task card(s) his/her students are ready to tackle.
Ways to Use the Cards
Student Groups
Place students in stations. Each station can represent a different standard. Have students choose cards to work on, or you can assign cards. Allow students to work independently and switch cards, or have students work together on each card.
Assign the number of cards you want completed prior to students beginning the task(s).
Independent Practice
Classwork: Assign students specific standards to work on based on data you have accumulated through formative assessments.
Homework: Assign students additional practice at home with a few task cards.
Student Choice: Allow students to choose task cards based on skills they need to work on, or activities they are interested in completing.
